The Legacy
In the late 1800's, Sterling's Grocery and Dry Goods Store served up all the makings for a well stocked Southern kitchen and home. Proprietor Tom Sterling was known for his generous heart and gracious manner. More than 100 years later, Tom's niece, Marianne Graf-Thomas opened Sterling's Southern Cafe in the same dry goods store building. Today Tom Sterlings legacy continues across the street in the freshly renovated Bachlott -Graf Thomas House.
John R. Bachlott had this house built in 1910 at the cost of $4,500. He died in 1934 and his widow, Signora Brandon Bachlott lived here until her death in 1948. Gilman Paper Company bought the residence to provide space for local medical service. In fact, Marianne can recall getting treated here as a little girl.
Marianne and her staff extend to every guest a slice of the Old South. Steeped in history and adorned with a charm and coziness one must experience first hand to understand. Marianne's Sterling’s Southern Cafe is where friends and family gather -to celebrate, to share, and to surrender to the gentler times of Yesteryear.
